NOTE: Although our request for funding from the NSDL has not been successful, we will continue to offer the source code for our data-rich authoring system.
We thank all of our partners for their support and their educational goals

"Projects such as the... Data Discovery Toolkit show promise for revolutionizing how users collect and synthesize the information they discover through NSDL."

The Data Discovery Toolkit and Foundry NSDL Project uses Macromedia authoring capabilities built over an IDL (RSI, Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ITT Technologies) data/model access, visualization, and analysis engine. The resulting educational software products combine the rich media capabilities of Macromedia Director Shockwave (and Flash) with the research-level data and model capabilities of IDL.

Again this year, our reviews were positive, but funding for the Foundry as an omnibus effort was not made available.

Here are some of the 2004 NSF reviewer' s comments (all reviews were very good or good):

"This proposal is extremely well conceived and organized. PIs are very well qualified. This group has provided the DDTF, which is the NSDL's main code-level community resource. The plans for collaboration with HEAL, the Smithsonian, NOAA, Lawrence Hall of Science, Rice University, Boston Museum of Science and additional groups looks very exciting."

"This project promotes data literacy by building and sharing appropriate tools across all STEM disciplines."
"This project would help redefine NSDL from a DL that contains only content to a library where code can be located and shared, thus increasing productivity for other DL developers."
"The project proposes to create reusable code resources and to connect  educational content with real data and models as a way of creating new value from active use of content code."
"The Data Discovery Toolkit can deliver data discovery tools for any STEM discipline as well as build a center for data-visualization  tool development for all levels of education."
"This project has the potential for bridging the gaps between research and education, and between community-based and commercial software development approaches. "
"Making data available as is proposed through the NSDL is wholly laudable and desirable.  It could genuinely have a benevolent effect for the NSDL and for the community."

We can work one-on-one with you to create the tools you need. But we will have to work together to find the funding to make this happen.
