The Friction Layer of the Atmosphere

The friction layer refers to the layer of atmosphere between the altitudes of 2 m and approximately 2 km. The top of the friction layer may be considered the elevation of the 850 mb isobar. Within the friction layer, circulation patterns of wind will be influenced by friction with land or water.
