Recent Projects

In 2003, through funding by the NSF [Award # 0329044] the New Media Studio will provide a searchable database of the Marine Mammal Commission's Compendium of Selected Treaties, International Agreements, and Other Relevant documents on Marine Resources, Wildlife, and the Environment, a 5 volume set compiled since 1993. The search mechanism is a patented system created by Paul Berkman, the project's PI: Information Management, Retrieval and Display Systems and Associated Methods. The project will utilize an advisory board selected from relevant agencies, including the NSDL DLESE and DWEL projects, will implement evaluation strategies and will develop K-12 usability features. The site will be housed at the Byrd Polar Research Center to ensure continued availability. As well as site creation, a CD ROM offered both with and without cost recovery options will be produced and disseminated to 500 agencies, individuals, and academic institutions.

NSDL data Discovery Project

In 2001, The New Media Studio recieved a grant from the National Science Foundation to incorporate data visualization and analysis capabilities into the library's portfolio of services. To accomplish this goal, The New Media Studio worked with Planet Earth Science, Inc. to develop the "Data Discovery Toolkit and Foundry". While TNMS will be producing the initial set of tools, we will also be forging an online community of software developers who will have the ability not only to use the toolkit, but to further expand the toolkit with their own visualization tools.
